Coates 1989 LUDSHOTT, Domesday Book manor, common in Bramshott Smith (English Place Name Elements I: 254) conjectures an Old English word or name for a hypothetical stream 'hlyde'='the loud one'; a form of this shape will account for the first element. The second is 'sceat'='nook, angle'. But no other case is known of 'sceat' preceded by an ancient place name. The typical name has a tree- or plant name in first place. No plant name 'hlyde' is known. |
